{FAMILY DIY} Photogs of the Next Generation!

Juggling work, the house, kids, etc can be challenging at times. Who am I kidding ? It is challenging all the time. Even before I worked, I found it very difficult to spend enough time attending to everything and everyone's needs. Fortunately by now I have learned when it is time to put everything away and spend some quality time with my monkeys.

If you are like me and love to spend time with your little ones, but don't necessarily like to play polly pockets or trucks for two hours. This is a super easy and fun project for you to do with them. The best part is that is a great way to stimulate their creative side. Also if you have a few little couch potatoes that have watched one too many looney toon episodes, or little video gamers that have been attached to the virtual world ... it can be wonderful to promote more outdoor play. They can go exploring outside and take pictures of their favorite flowers, critters, or friends :) You never know you could have a future photographer extraordinaire in the fam :)

{SUPPLIES}

Colored paper

Two empty granola boxes or gummy boxes

A disposable camera:

A plastic or canning tin lid

Scissors

Glue

Glue gun

Tape

{INSTRUCTIONS}

{1} Place the camera inside granola box (make sure the camera is scooted all the way to the left of the box and that it is tightly touching the left and the top of box. )

{2} Cut box number 2 lengthwise so that it fits as a stand for the camera inside box number 1 where the camera is in ( make sure that it is tight so camera has no room to move in there )

{3} Fill box number 2 that is being used as a stand with something like paper towels so that the camera is more secure and tight ( I did not need to with mine)

{4} Cut holes in the box for the view finder, flash, etc in the back and front.

{5} With the tape seal the box making sure the camera is very secure.

{6} Wrap the whole thing with the colored paper.

{7} Cut holes in the papers where the view finder, flash etc are.

{8} Glue the plastic or tin lid with a glue gun as a nice prime lens ;)

{9} Decorate to taste by cutting papers in cool shapes and gluing them on. You can have your kids use some of their stickers too.

{10} Send the kids outside and put them to work !!

The kids will be so excited for you to take them to get the pictures developed so don't make your monkeys wait to long or they will go bananas ;)

To prevent serious injuries or hearing " MOM !! Sister is not letting me have a turn ..." ;) make as many cameras as you have kids ;) Have fun !!

DIY Photography: {How to create memories of your kids in an artistic way}

Alex was born in Lima, Peru. When she was sixteen when she moved to Central Point, Oregon. A few years after graduating high school she met, fell in love with and married her husband. Together they have two very active girls. She is an amazingly creative photographer, and we are excited to have her share her "brilliance" with us!! Make sure to go to her FB page and "like" her! She deserves it!!

I've been having a blast documenting my little ones lives by taking pictures and video taping them. Even though I live to imagine, invent, and create, I have never been a fan of scrap booking. Nothing against it I think it is a great way to preserve pictures and memories. I just have never gotten into it, however I do love to put pictures up on our walls.

In this post I will give you ideas of fun ways to personalize your kids rooms in a way that they will always remember. You can decide what you would like to do for this project, by coming up with an idea that best fits your family.

I have chosen to take a picture of my daughter Jennah and her best pal in the world. Her name is baby. I know it is not very original -- she did name her when she was one, but she loves her so much. She has been in our family since Jennah was born. We do not dare to leave her anywhere because she won't sleep without her; literally! We left her in Seattle once and we did not sleep until grandma overnighted her!!! I have also decided to take a picture of my youngest daughter Isabella and her weiner dog Twinkers, who is her best pal.

For this project you need:

An idea/ vision like the one above

A camera ( it does not need to be a fancy one )

Some sort of editing program such as Photoshop elements, or Picasso ( it is free I believe)

[editors note: EMM's use picnik.com...it's easy for those not too smart :) ]

Frames to hang the pictures in.

Step One

Decide what background you want to use for your picture...be sure to pick and area that has plenty of natural light. I chose my girls playroom because I like the pastel tones in that room.

Step Two

Dress up your little ones or whoever is going to be in the picture. It looks best when all of the colors flow together. I chose to dress my girls in fun, colorful shirts and pink tule skirts. I also made sure that Baby and Twinkers got their bath and looked as good as they could from being loved/abused for as long as they have!

Step Three

Turn off the flash and take a couple of test shots. You may need to turn the flash on if the pictures are not clear. You can use your editing software to make it look more natural and artsy.

Set your subjects up in the planed area, and snap away! (the more you take, the better chance of getting a GREAT one!)

Step Four

Pick your favorite pictures and edit them to taste in the program you like. Always start by fixing the light, sharpening ( not too sharp ) then you can play with the colors, textures or whatever effects you like.

Step Five

Order your prints!!! Yea! ( or print them yourself)

A photo lab will be able to make your pictures look much better than your home printer. I refer all of my clients to Total Camera in Medford where you can get a CD or order the pictures online and pick them up or have them shipped to you. You can even call and ask them to make adjustments to assure the best results. No they are not paying me to advertise ... I just really like the quality. Gena knows what I am taking about ;)

Step Six

Shop for your frames and hang them up :)

Here is my finished product
And here is what my kids thought about it...
No need for words :) Have fun!

How to take a great picture of your monkeys...

Alex owns Maria Alexandra Photography and is our guest contributor here at EMM today. She is inspired by the beauty each individual has, by the innocence and happiness of every child, and by the love each couple feels for one another. She cherishes capturing those special moments and the ability to create a treasure for her clients to keep forever.

Photography is all about good light, nailing the exposure of each picture by choosing the right aperture and shutter speed. Mix all that up with a little creativity and you have got yourself a great photograph. I wont get technical about it in this tutorial. This is for the regular mom with the regular camera to learn how they can easily take a great picture of their kidos.

1) Go outside. Overcast days that are not dark are best. That way your monkeys are not squinting or have shadows on their faces. Or if it is sunny find some shade. You can even make shade. Get your husband off the couch by divoing his game    and threatening him with his life and have him stand out there with you to hold the large patio umbrella. Believe me it works ;)

2) Pick a good background. Be aware of weird foreign objects that may draw too much attention. Your monkeys should be the main focus

3) Think of a fun thing/ toy that would make your kids happy that could be used as a prop. Having everything set up and prepared for your mini shoot before taking the kids out is best. Kids get tired super fast, having them stand around while you set up and decide what you are going to do will waste time and you will have little to no time to actually take their pictures.

4) Threaten... I mean ask... your husband one more time and have him stand where you are planing to take the pictures and do a few test shots to make sure the light is good and everything looks good.  ( turn your flash off to avoid red eyes)

5) Bring the kids out to your set up area and let them play. Get in front of them and wait to catch your favorite moments and cute faces they naturally make.  Try different angles. If your kids are not looking at the camera try talking to them, tell them a story for a cute serious face, tell them a funny story for a cute smile. I have to make fart noises for my girls so if you know what makes your kids laugh do it even if once again you have your husband help and act as the clown.

I was making fart noises

I was telling her a story

Moms Please do not bribe your children with their favorite candy and threaten them with not getting any if they don't smile. This will only make them give you a cheesy smile or upset them, however you may reward them after the shoot is over and tell them they did so good. This makes the experience a positive one and they will be happy to have you take their pictures again.

Have fun :)
